Indwelling Catheters in the Acute Care Settings:
Focus on the Prevention of Catheter-associated Urinary Tract Infection
Written and narrated by: Mikel Gray PhD, FNP, PNP, CUNP, CCCN, FAAN
Professor and Nurse Practitioner
University of Virginia
Dept of Urology and School of Nursing
Course Description:
Beginning October 2008, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) issued an update to their prospective payment system. The update identified eight conditions that, effective October 2008, are no longer reimbursed when hospital acquired. The first condition listed in the CMS ruling is catheter associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI). This online program reviews current evidence concerning the prevention of CAUTI, including selecting optimal materials of catheter construction, catheter size, filling the retention balloon, selecting an optimal drainage system and securing the catheter.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the program, the learner will be able to:
1. Discuss the epidemiology of catheter-associated UTI in the acute care setting.
2. List the risk factors for CAUTI.
3. Describe the signs and symptoms of CAUTI.
4. Identify at least 3 evidence-based practices to prevent CAUTI
